On the Playlist part,
I think it's a wonderful Summer assemblage.
But listen, it's impossible, when absorbing these marvellous creative playlists, not to see, still, in one's mind's eye, like the Martian Insect hovering o'er all London at the conclusion to "Five Million Years to Earth", a vision of the One Enduring and still Unequalled song of the world:
"Don't Bring Me Down", by the Animals.
Nothing and no one, except, sometimes, Karen Young or Mike Francis — I admit it — can touch "Don't Bring Me Down".
I mean, I wish that weren't the pinnacle.
(Don't we all wish that Journey weren't the pinnacle of anthemic rock 'n roll?)
But you can't alter facts. You also can't hurry love…
(which is not true, by the way).
I have been totally out of the Mockingbird loop for the last five days. Just saw this summer reading thread.
Emily, I am so delighted to hear that you are going to be reading both of the Lewis Carroll classics. Woo-hoo! I absolutely love them — can't wait to hear what you think. If you really like them, you might want to take a look at THE ANNOTATED ALICE by the late and beloved Martin Gardner.
Also pleased to see that you are a fan of Flannery O'Connor. You and MB's Michael Cooper should get together sometime — he's crazy about FOC.
I am having fun right now with a great vampire novel (THE PASSAGE). Also on my list for the summer:
* Cheever: A life
* The Knife of Never Letting Go
