Thanks to RJ, a relevant snippit of dialogue from the scene where Geoffrey Rush’s character explains the theater business to his angry financier:

Rush: “Mr. Fennyman, allow me to explain about the theater business. The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.”
Fennyman: “So what do we do?”
Rush: “Nothing… Strangely enough it all turns out well.”
Fennyman: “How?”
Rush: “I don’t know. It’s a mystery.”
