EpiscoDisco: The Documentary – Out Now!

Let’s face it–this is probably the single coolest thing Mockingbird has ever been involved with, or will ever be involved with. I’m talking about the short documentary on DJ JAZ and “The Episco Disco” that VICE (and their electronic music division Thump) filmed at our conference in NYC this year. A culmination of culminations! Of course, if it’s all downhill from here, at least our decline will have a killer soundtrack.

Those in the United States can click on the image below to watch ten of the greatest minutes of the year. Those in other countries will either have to get crafty, or wait til the video hits youtube later this year:

And if by some sad circumstance you missed the session John mentions in the clip, never fear: we got you covered.

1. After Dave’s post on male problems this week, The Economist published a long-form essay about the plight of blue-collar men in the West. The pay for men with only a high-school diploma fell by 21% (real terms) between 1979 and 2013, as one of the clear male advantages is brawn, which is less relevant than ever when it comes to earnings. Moreover, these men may not have studied feminism in college, but they’ve found themselves in a world increasingly affected by it:

Their ideas of the world and their place in it are shaped by old assumptions about the special role and status due…

Brand-New Book and an Advent Sermon by John Zahl

Brand-New Book and an Advent Sermon by John Zahl

We’re happy to announce another Mbird-friendly book out now: friend and Mbird contributor John Zahl‘s new sermon collection from Grace Church, Charleston, titled Sermons of Grace! We can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s available for purchase on Amazon here. The sermon below is the book’s opener and a great beginning to Advent, first given on Dec 1, 2013.

Prepare the way of the Lord… (Matthew 3:3)

John the Baptist’s words this morning are unequivocal: “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” It is undeniable that “preparation” is one of the main themes of Advent.

The readings in Advent contain an eschatological emphasis, which means that they deal with…

JAZ's Faves of 2010

JAZ’s Faves of 2010

A quick wracking of the brain brings these picks to mind (in alphabetical order):

The Book of Eli. On the bible: “Don’t you see? It’s not a book, it’s a weapon!”Get Low. Love Robert Duvall! Deep, moving, forgiveness and the lack of it, telling the whole story once again. Plus, Bill Murray is so funny in this one.Inception. Thought it was awesome until I saw the south park episode about it.  I just hope the director had a correct answer to the end in mind. The Kids are Alright. Hilarious, thought-provoking, phenomenal acting. The Social Network. Eerie, smart, made me feel bad for…

Weds Afternoon Rock N Roll: When New Order Played Baywatch

In keeping with JAZ’s pool party mix, here’s one of the more surreal pairings of the last 20 years. New Order chose to stage their Top Of The Pops performance of “Regret” – one of my favorite songs of theirs – on the set of Baywatch. Hasselhoff himself makes an appearance, just before Peter Hook’s incredible bass solo:

The Best Argument For Atheism and The Bible Is Obviously Wrong (About Dogs)

Some stellar Lenten preaching from our very own cousin-in-Christ DJ JAZ, delivered last week at Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, AL.

Pensacola Mini-Conference Round-Up (Audio and Text Files) - UPDATED

Pensacola Mini-Conference Round-Up (Audio and Text Files) – UPDATED

A major thank you to everyone who was involved with our first ever mini-conference at the end of January. About 60 of us gathered for 36 hours at the beautiful Christ Episcopal Church in Pensacola, FL, to hear about “God’s Grace In A World Of Glory”. It was a blast!

The conference opened with dinner Friday night (Mbird cake!), followed by the opening talk from Dr. Mark Mattes: “The Theology Of The Cross Today” – the audio of which you can download by clicking on the title.

On Saturday, Dr. Mattes (pictured below) kicked things off with his characteristically profound “Luther As…

Yet Another Wrinkle In The Avatar Story: Depression And Suicide

Yet Another Wrinkle In The Avatar Story: Depression And Suicide

Continuing the movie kick we’ve been on this past couple weeks, CNN recently posted this very revealing piece about the reaction to the film in some quarters (ht JAZ):

James Cameron’s completely immersive spectacle “Avatar” may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site “Naviblue” that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie. //

“Ever since I went to see ‘Avatar’ I have been…

Here’s the full list plus a couple of relevant additions, linked to sites where they can be purchased.
