One never really needs a reason to write about Bob Seger, but if you are the sort of person who requires one, take the recent Gaslight Anthem record, Handwritten, which made a lot of critics’ year-end lists, including our own. People have described that band as splitting the difference between Social Distortion and Springsteen, but all I hear is Seger, glorious Seger (backed by The Replacements). I hear it in their widescreen anthems of discontent and in their unabashed American-ness, in their obvious belief in the power of rock n roll. I hear it most of all in singer Brian…
April Playlist
One of the features I was most excited about on this new site was the ability to host the monthly playlists. Instead of, say, relying on the kindness of anonymous strangers… So from now on, the playlist will be available to stream each month, both in the playlist post and in the sidebar of all the individual post pages (i.e. not the index/front page) for the duration of said month. This month’s collection has a surprisingly 90s vibe… Enjoy:

February Playlist
A bit of an 80s/euro vibe this time around. With the notable exception of “Song For Him”, as far I know the only song Bob Seger ever wrote about Jesus. Which is ironic, considering that during the early 70s – i.e. the out-of-print Seger golden period – Bob rocked the Jesus-look harder than anyone (which is saying something). Enjoy:
1. The Riddle – Nik Kershaw
2. Left To My Own Devices – Pet Shop Boys
3. 1963 – New Order
4. The Gift – INXS
5. The Feeding Of The 5000 – Ian Brown
