Pretty funny (and on target), as always, from Stephen Colbert. The best line, however: “if this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition…and then admit that we just don’t want to do it.”

    Attn: Steven Colbert

Jim Wallis called. He wants his trope back.

  2. Jameson Graber says:

How selfless and pure in heart are those who use the coercive powers of the government to spend other people's money to help the poor.

  3. Shawn says:

i personally enjoyed replacing the baby Jesus with a Christmas ham.

  4. Mark Babikow says:

    Christmas Ham….uuuuuuuuurrrrrrrghhhhh.

Hi, my name is Mark…and I completely want to help the poor up to, and no less, but not more than the point that I am willing to do so.

The problem are O'Reilly's comments "as a Christian." Colbert's shtick is to satirically emulate "Papa Bear" as he so affectionately calls him.

So when "Papa Bear" says substandard things about what it means to be a Christian, Colbert emulates to the point of absurdity as he did here.

That being said, he isn't all that wrong. Our other problem is we're Americans. I'm pretty sure when the prophets were railing against Israel for mistreatment of the poor they were telling them that Yahweh just really wants the poor and downtrodden to help themselves. Then Yahweh will love the poor and due to their protestant work ethic they will be blessed abundantly.

Nope. Not what it says at all. Sometimes we have to come to terms with the fact that our baptized identity trumps allegiance to country. Our being Christian has communal implications. And when there are those in that community who are poor, widowed, fatherless, and destitute, guess what the call of the Christian is? Help them. And when the need is too great, it just may be worth exploring ways to use the gov't beneficially. This goes beyond base economics and has a lot to do with education neglect of the poor in this country.

Is it fair to call Jesus a "Liberal Democrat?" No, I don't think so. But remember again the context of his comments and the shtick Colbert employs.

Funny! I've really gotten to like Colbert, especially for his sly, knowledgeable, under-the-radar theological commentary, which you just don't find anybody else in the media doing….

  7. Matt says:

So if it's part of your "context," it's ok to play fast and loose with the facts?

    Awesome.

    Where can I get a ChristBox360?
    Does Amazon stock it?
    🙂
