This picture would really make a great "caption contest"…I think he looks a lot like the drum major of my high school band (mullet and all!).

grace smiles at me through a ring of law…waves and says…"don't worry, dude, you don't have to jump through this hoop!"

Yes to all of you! Michael nailed my thoughts exactly. Something about the love that lies on the other side of judgment. Definitely two words here.

Albert, your comment cracked me up!

Here, Here, John…Micahel's comment nails it. Although I'm a little concerned for this guy–not sure that polyesther color guard uniform is flame retardent!

"he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames" (1Co 3.15), on account of the hair

I was thinking this is just straight up Acts 2, combined with coming "not for the healthy, but the sick".

Seriously, there is no way this is not about the Holy Spirit!

When Simeon sees flames, he thinks of the Holy Spirit; when I see flames, I think about judgment. That says a lot about the relative spiritual health of both of us, unfortunately for me :-)

Wow, I remember Doug Henning from when I was a child. Apparently he was REALLY into TM. Sadly, his theme park concept was unrealised due to his death a few years ago.

    According to (ahem) Wikipedia:
'One of Henning's greatest ambitions was never realized in his lifetime. In the 1990s Henning joined forces with Transcendental Meditation founder Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to draft plans for a fantastical billion-dollar project called Maharishi Veda Land that was to be situated near Niagara Falls, Ontario and would "combine astonishing, unique visual and sensory effects, state-of-the-art 3D imagery, and ultra high-tech entertainment technology with his best and most original magic illusion secrets".[6] Maharishi Veda Land was conceived as a magical Himalayan setting where visitors would be wowed with theatrical presentations of ancient Vedic stories and “the deepest secrets of the universe", while ingesting organic vegetarian burgers and snacks. Attractions would have included a building seemingly suspended above water without supports, a "magic flying chariot" that took riders inside the molecular structure of a rose, and robots that would fly through the air, performing magic tricks.'

I guess I just have to agree with Simeon:
there is no way this is not about the Holy Spirit.

If the fire is the Holy Spirit, I think the band uniform underscores our anthropology, ie, we are all just "band geeks" if we're truly honest with ourselves.

About

WHAT: Mockingbird seeks to connect the Christian faith with the realities of everyday life in fresh and down-to-earth ways.

WHY: Are we called Mockingbird? The name was inspired by the mockingbird’s peculiar gift for mimicking the cries of other birds. In a similar way, we seek to repeat the message we have heard - God’s word of grace and forgiveness.

HOW: Via every medium available! At present this includes (but is not limited to) a daily weblog, semi-annual conferences, and an ongoing publications initiative.

WHO: At present, we employ two full-time staff, David Zahl and Ethan Richardson and one part-time, William McDavid. They are helped and supported by a large number of contributing volunteers and writers. Our board of directors is chaired by Mr. Thomas Becker.

WHERE: Our offices are located in Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville, VA.

WHEN: Mockingbird was incorporated in June 2007 and is currently in its sixth year of operation.

Online Giving

The work of Mockingbird is made possible by the gifts of private donors and churches. Our 2013 operating budget is roughly $170,000, and with virtually no overhead, your gifts translate directly into mission and ministry. Can you help?
