Real quick: I wanted to call attention to Caleb Maskell’s excellent blog, Nobody But The Baby. The man has clearly been given a burst of inspiration these past couple weeks. He’s got a knack for finding fascinating examples of Worlds-Colliding like the BBC interview with David Soul (aka Hutch of Starsky And Hutch fame…) on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Kierkegaardian aspects of The Big Lebowski (aka the funniest movie of all time), or this (for JDK):

ummmm… what?!

p.s. Raise your hand if you have any of David Soul’s solo records from the early 70s. Mexican folk songs may never receive such Norwegian treatment ever again…

p.p.s. That Sun Kil Moon record is as good as Caleb says.

    hey kids:

thanks for the props from DZ. the blog tends to expand to fit time allowed. christmas break = max bloggery.

re: DZ’s confusion about big NT’s comments on colbert, i really wish i could say that i knew what the hon bish was talking about. he probably wishes that i knew too, b/c then i would be a more excellent read of the bible. but, who knows…something about it feels a bit of stretch. i wonder if he is spending his intellectual and ecclesiastical capital in the right place.

nonetheless, i respect the dude immensely and love much of his other work. so chances are high that there is something worth getting here. it’s just that colbert didn’t manage to extract it.

    pax vobiscum

Awesome post. Reminds me of the Woody Allen interview of Billy Graham, except less heartfelt.

Something also seemed a bit off to me, as well. The idea that the things we make right in this world will carry over into the next? Seems like an emergent idea that we partner with God in the renewal of creation (sorry if that sounds harsh).

In fact, what Colbert says about Jesus being able to “clear everything up in an afternoon” seems more akin to Paul’s words about being changed “in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye” (1Co 15.52).

In any event, amazing to see such a huge theological figure on Colbert!

“The Big Lebowski”…the choice of my personal torture for Chad and his fraternity brothers…I have lost count of how many times we have watched and quoted…alas must be a guy thing…I just don’t get it…which amuses them even more. 🙂

    R-J,
I don’t know much about the emergent church or MB’s critiques of it and why a comparison of NT Wright’s ideas to it would “sound harsh”, but regardless of the language we use to try to describe/understand the nature and work of God, God exists despite ourselves. Is it so far-fetched that the Spirit of God might enter into the Earth to bring about a restoration to Him? What about the second coming? From your post I glean that the language of the emergent church is too active for your doctrine. Ultimately the Universe plays out it’s cosmic game whether or not we actively choose to participate. I think our idea of separating “this world from the next” is fallible from God’s perspective, because God Is despite our limited perception in the physical.

    Thoughts?
